Introduction

One of the major features of Diablo 3 is Jewel Crafting. Gems allow you to customize the stats on your gear to max out on things like critical hit damage, magic find, vitality, and your primary statistic. Many of the best items have sockets, so you need to be able to get the best gems to maximize those items. The Jeweler NPC lets you combine gems of lower levels to create upper tier gems.

Your first task is to level the Jeweler up to his maximum level, Exalted, which is level ten. All your characters share your jeweler (and blacksmith), so once you get him to 10, you're done. Only a maxed jeweler can make the best gems.

When you start out, combining gems to "roll up" to the next level is a relatively cheap process. However, as you reach the later tiers of Jewel Crafting combining gems becomes quite pricey. In addition to the lower tier gems, you expend other materials and more gold for each gem you craft. The top three tiers of Jewel Crating also require you to "train" your jeweler further with extremely rare patterns that you have to find or buy to unlock each subsequent tier.

This Jewel Crafting calculator finds the total cost of upgrading from a lower to higher tier gem. It breaks down inputs into the required materials and tells you exactly how many you'll need of each. You can also use it to compare the cost of expending materials and combining gems to get your desired gem versus the cost of buying a higher tier gem straight from the auction house. Simply enter the current auction house prices for the various materials that are required to get an idea of how much gold you will need to spend. Then get the right gems, slot them into your Diablo 3 gear, and go slay.
